Pen Pals Club

Katherine Sherbourne — Mon, 29 Sep 2025 07:57:39 +0000

The letters the children write in Pen Pals Club don’t have far to travel – just down the road to Stowford House care home– but they go a long way in connecting young and old. Our Year 5 and 6 scribes have been delighted to receive their first replies from their Pen Pals and it’s lovely to see the beginnings of some epistolary inter-generational friendships!

Year 5 River Pang Trip

Katherine Sherbourne — Mon, 22 Sep 2025 07:42:46 +0000

Year 5 had a productive and enjoyable time at the River Pang this week. Not only did they learn how to measure the depth, width and flow of a river, how a river meanders, erodes, flows and deposits, they also learnt about bees, which ties in nicely with their current science project on plant reproduction.

Year 6 Forensic Day

Katherine Sherbourne — Fri, 20 Jun 2025 13:18:27 +0000

Year 6 spent the day learning about crime scene investigation with Pulse CSI. The children engaged in a number of educational and hands-on activities, including fingerprinting using magnetic powder and black ink and analysing fibre, footwear and hair. Having mastered the basics, the children donned white Scene of Crime Officer suits before applying their new skills to group crime scenes that they had to investigate and report on. The day was not only fun, interesting and informative, but it also promoted teamwork and problem-solving.

Year 3 History Trip to Ufton Court

Katherine Sherbourne — Mon, 09 Jun 2025 08:53:31 +0000

Year 3 started their week in style with a trip to Ufton Court and stepped back in time to the Viking Age! We very much enjoyed a day of hands-on activities and learning about what life was like for Norse people in the year 870. We discovered how the Vikings trained as warriors, with a masterclass on battle formations and how to fight using a sword and shield, and practised survival skills including starting a fire and making woollen thread. Sailing was also explored through an interactive longboat experience and the children had an opportunity to raid treasure chests for silks, spices and more! We had a great day bringing our History topic to life!

Year 6 Bletchley Park trip and VE Day 80

Katherine Sherbourne — Mon, 12 May 2025 07:37:59 +0000

Year 6 had an incredible time visiting Bletchley Park on VE Day. The children discovered why codebreaking happened at Bletchley Park, how messages were intercepted and delivered there, why secrecy was so important and what life was like for the Codebreakers. They even had a demonstration of the Enigma machine. What a amazing day to learn about fascinating wartime history!

The rest of the school also had a great day learning the history of VE day and celebrating its 80th anniversary.

Year 6 Dragon’s Den Challenge

Katherine Sherbourne — Tue, 06 May 2025 08:24:54 +0000

Last week, Year 6 pupils participated in a Dragon’s Den Challenge. Our budding entrepreneurs took on the challenge with energy, creativity and flair. From eco-friendly inventions to fitness based apps, each team designed their own business, created innovative products and pitched their ideas to a panel of fierce but friendly Dragons. The excitement didn’t stop there, the week ended with a buzzing market day, where the rest of the school explored the stalls and “invested” their green chip in their favourite business. The market was alive with persuasive sales pitches, eye-catching branding and proud smiles. An unforgettable week full of teamwork, confidence and real world learning … our future business leaders have definitely arrived!

Congratulations Year 6!

Katherine Sherbourne — Tue, 01 Apr 2025 12:32:17 +0000

We are enjoying another year of superb Year 6 results, with children gaining places at a fantastic variety of outstanding Senior Schools. We are also delighted to be celebrating a bumper number of scholarships, with just over 30% of the children receiving award offers. The year group of 53 children has gained an impressive total of 28 awards between them across a variety of disciplines, ranging from Academic to Sport, Art and Music. The Senior Schools recognising The Ӱҵ’s talented pupils include Abingdon School, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Reading Blue Coat and St Helen and St Katharine, to name just a few. Whilst scholarships and awards are to be celebrated, what is most important is that all of the children progress to a Senior School that is right for them; where they can continue to grow and flourish. We are so very proud, as each and every Year 6 child has shown remarkable determination and they have also impressed with their positive, articulate and considerate approach at interview as well as with their kindness and support of one another. This is about so much more than pure academic results and we know that our ‘Class of 2025’ will go from strength to strength!

‘Au Musée Magique’

Katherine Sherbourne — Tue, 25 Mar 2025 11:14:48 +0000

Children in Year 6 were treated to a performance of ‘Au Musée Magique’ this week; an interactive play in French and English where pupils encountered colourful characters as they search for paintings that have mysteriously disappeared from Le Louvre! Lucy and her team from ‘Joy for Kids’ enthused and entertained our pupils who helped the characters by using their French knowledge of fruit and vegetables, sports, musical instruments, and conversational French.

Bravo, les enfants!

British Science Week

Katherine Sherbourne — Tue, 18 Mar 2025 09:57:10 +0000

This week, the children have been enjoying the theme of “Change and Adapt” during British Science Week. Year 2 participated in a live lesson called “Change Champions” with NFU Education. They joined a family farm walk to help look after all of their animals and learnt about the ways they fight climate change on the farm. During the lesson they earned their ‘Biodiversity Buddy’, ‘Energy Expert’ and ‘Waste Warrior’ badges.

Year 4 have been investigating the change which happens to teeth in different types of drinks, Year 5 have been researching metamorphosis and Year 6 have investigated which conditions are best for yeast to respire. In other exciting science news, Lizzie Y5
and Isla Y6 was in the top 12 entries (out of 850) for designing a mission patch (for a space mission heading to the ISS) as part of a competition entered for one of our homework projects.
